CIPA restored their slightly sagging prestige with a convincing win over TFL/DLR on Tuesday 26 June, winning by 43 runs.

CIPA won the toss, and took the opportunity to bat first of a pitch which, although always difficult, became more so as the game progressed. Once again CIPA’s batting possessed both style and substance, and provided yet another triumph for Andy Spurr and Stuart Lumsden , both retiring on 26 and 25 respectively. This perhaps went some way to banish memories of their rather poor form again at the hands of Thompson Reuters the previous week. Robert Carpmael and Al Davidson also chipped in with useful runs, the latter demonstrating a range of strokes not often seen at this level of cricket. CIPA’s first innings score totalled 178, seen as a more than competitive total.

When TFL/DLR took the field, it was with some apprehension, as they had been made aware that CIPA were fielding Messrs Heston Orchard and Gareth Jones from the Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society. Both competent golfers, it was assumed that they would be equally adept on a cricket pitch. However, their fears could not have been more allayed. One doesn’t like to signal out individual cricketers for their poor performance, but Orchard’s fielding must be highlighted. Four drops (including one avoidance) and a dolly of his own bowling, accompanied by the number of runs he let through on the boundary could only be described as a calamity. However, despite this CIPA managed to skittle TFL/DLR for 135. Special mention should be given to Rob Carpmael, whose spell included a double wicket maiden and 4 wickets in all. His loop, flight and guile were reminiscent of young Abdul Qadir.

CIPA now look forward to their next match against The Treasury with renewed vigour.
