After a disappointing start to the season, with two losses and two cancellations, CIPA were keen to get the season back on track against Thompson Reuters. Transport issues meant that many of the CIPA team were delayed in arriving, and so the opposition kindly suggested that we bat first. Given our abysmal track record in run chases, captain Chris Milton readily agreed.

We got off to a flyer, thanks to the trusty edge of Andy Grant (26 not out) and the mysterious absence of a third man. The rapid run rate was continued by Bruce Torrance and Jon Bailey, who got to 29 not out and 30 not out respectively and also managed to find the middle of the bat on occasion.

At this point, it looked as though we could be on for a very good score, perhaps even pushing for 200, but unfortunately the innings rather fizzled in the last five overs. Only Alex Wilson out of the subsequent batsmen got into double figures, with Rob Jackson and Mark Dean bagging ducks. Nonetheless, a total of 156 seemed above par.

It would be fair to say that this wasn't the strongest CIPA bowling line up of all time. We were also missing a regular keeper, though Nick King volunteered to stand in and proved more than competent with a catch and run out.

Thompson Reuters got off to a very decent start, with openers Bruce Torrance and Ben Hunter unable to keep the run rate down. It was only when Stuart Lumsden bowled a typically miserly spell (4 overs for 14 runs with 1 wicket) that it looked like we might have a chance.

A steady trickle of wickets from Andy Grant, Chris Milton and the two openers (in their second spells) brought us within touching distance of a victory, the opposition needing 8 runs off the final over with 1 wicket in hand. Up stepped Andy Grant who bowled a full toss that should have gone for six, but instead clattered into the stumps.

A fine victory for CIPA, with catches (for Mark Dean and Nick King) outnumbering drops (Mark Dean) for once and two nicely executed runs outs demonstrating what a difference non-useless fielding can make.
