11th Jun 2013 - Alexandra Palace
Lost by 8 runs - NRR = -0.4
We turned up at Ally Pally in light drizzle for a pitch inspection which resulted in the unanimous decision to bowl from one end to avoid a marsh at the other. Captain Mark Jolly avoided the toss by being late, but Stuart Lumsden expertly filled his place by losing it.
We were put into the field where after spending quite a while retrieving balls from the hedges, it quietened down with the controlled bowling of Robert Carpmael who took three classic off-spinner wickets in his debut match.
We restricted Reuters to just 111, a target we thought we could knock off quite easily. However, the openers fell without making much damage, and Andy Spurr departed having reached the 25 run retirement level. He returned to the pavilion thinking the job was done, and sitting pretty with a 50 career average. The rest of the batting line-up seemingly could not allow this and he had to return in the 19th over. Bob Ackroyd played out a few 'lively' balls before the final over came, CIPA needing 8 to win.
The first ball was a juicy slow full-toss outside off stump, just the start needed, unfortunately this was also just the ball that was needed to induce a catch on the cover boundary; Thompson Reuters completing a well-deserved victory that could have gone either way.
