CIPA travelled to Barnes Bridge to play the much anticipated return fixture against The Treasury. With a last minute narrow victory by 20 runs over these opponents in the home match, CIPA were expecting another classic, and this was to prove exactly what they got!
Things didn’t get off to the best of starts. Travelling to the game turned out to be more of a mission than usual. One of the hottest days of the year played havoc with the train’s aircon systems, and most players arrived on the Barnes Bridge platform looking like they had run a marathon with their shirts stuck to their bodies with sweat.

However, after a short walk to the ground, a quick change, toss done, CIPA’s opening batsmen entered the arena to begin their assault on The Treasury bowlers. Perfect weather and a good pitch where the ideal conditions for Robert Carpmael and Simon Thomas to start taking it to the bowlers.

A steady start saw Rob placing the ball in the gaps as he took himself to the brink of 25 not out, however, while on 24, a lapse in concentration saw the ball nip through and take the bails off. Simon had gone earlier while struggling to find space off their bowling.

The next four batsmen came to the crease and proceeded to inject some much needed urgency. Vish majestically knocking 25 not out and also Stuart Lumsden finding the gaps on his way to 27 not out.
After Andy Grant went for only 2, Jake Flint (1 not out) and Mark Jolly were at the crease for the last over. Mark ensured he played himself in before going for a shot off the last ball. Aiming to land it somewhere in Argentina, he instead left a gap designed for a ball to whistle through and hit the stumps. Another duck on the season card for Mr Jolly!

This gave The Treasury a target of 143 to take the win.

Picking up from the batting, Mark Jolly and Jake Flint opened the bowling and managed to pin down the oppo in each of their first overs, taking one wicket a piece. It looked at this point like the game had swung in the direction of CIPA, however, their batsmen found their range in Jakes second over, punishing it for 18 runs! Stuart Lumsden obviously did the right thing and sent him to third man with his tail between his legs while taking over the bowling.

The game then meandered as they edged towards triple figures. The bowling of Stuart Lumsden and certainly stemmed the flow, but it appeared the Tresaury would sneak home. However, a retirement and the bowling of both Vish and Christy Kulasingham changed the course of the match. Both were on target for line and length, and managed to pick up 2 wickets each.

As The Treasury closed in on the total, CIPA knuckled down to some last line of defence fielding, with Jake take a powerfully struck drive on the ankle at mid-off to save a four.

It came down to Christy to bowl the last over with them requiring 12 to win. Superb bowling ensured that they fell 8 short of the win, and meant another win for CIPA in an already impressive season.

All that was left was to the hit the bar, until they closed at 10 that is!!
