Bird and Bird

Given the generally wet weather and the murky sky it was surprising that we even got a game of cricket, let alone one as, at times, closely fought as this one.

As per, Andy Spurr opened the bowling with a series of testing deliveries outside off stump and Rob Patterson backed him up with some useful swing bowling of his own. Andy Spurr then struck twice in one over with a beautiful delivery snicked behind snaffled by Darren Gavigan and then with a slower ball which confused the batsmen all ends up. However, Bird and Bird then found their rhythm and the ball was disappearing to all parts of the ground before Chris Milton took a good catch at wide third man. However, the runs did not slow up until Stuart Lumsden, wicket-less for a change, and Milton bowled a series of tight overs. The 10-over change of ends then lead to several more expensive overs until Jake Flint brought a semblance of control to the proceedings. Special mention must go to Andy Grant on debut for an underarm long range run out with only one stump to aim at but Bird and Bird batted very well to post the biggest total we have conceded this year.

Probably the less said about the start of our batting the better – Mark Jolly somehow back of the batting it to the keeper, Andy Spurr run out taking a dangerous second to Stuart Lumsden fielding for the oppo, and Jake Flint’s batting woes continuing. However, at the other end Andy Clemson was looking as elegant as ever and clearly out of place on this team as he only scored runs on the off side along the ground, unlike Stuart “cow corner” Lumsden. Extras and some punchy hitting as well as restrained batting by Chris Milton lead us towards our target. However, the Bird and Bird captain bowled very well to remove Andy Clemson and Heston Orchard but Andy Grant was able to see us home facing 9 balls for 18 runs without a dot. All in all a very enjoyable game with good play throughout.
