CIPA batted first in an 'uncontested' toss given the late arrival of a few CIPA players (including this correspondent ed.), and got off to a ropey start. Justin learned who the best fielder was the hard way, while Tom F showed his full repertoire by spooning a dolly straight to mid off to leave CIPA 2 down for 1 run.


Jon and Tom C set about the rebuild job - not an easy task on a sticky wicket and lush outfield against a competent bowling attack. Jon led the way with some strong aerial shots, but his retirement led to another wobble: Tom C didn’t compare notes with Justin and was run out by the same super-fielder and Rob Jackson failed to trouble the scorers for a record-extending 14th career duck.


James and Bruce provided some middle order resistance but struggled to score quickly to finish on a mathematically pleasing 100 runs - a total that felt well short of a defendable total, and confirmed when the second over was dispatched for 14 runs.


Some otherwise tight bowling failed to bring about the breakthrough, but allowed the dangerous opener to reach retirement, after which CIPA successfully squeezed the run rate leading to a flurry of wickets. Some better-than-usual catching meant the wickets were shared equally between Nick, Bruce and James. The only “drop” being a sharp return chance that in truth the bowler did well to get near.


Ultimately the lack of runs told, with Taylor Wessing weathering their dry spell, and a late wobble, to knock off the required runs with almost 4 overs to spare.
